Turbine Flow Meters

Turbine flow meters are flow meters that measure the rate of flow of a liquid, gas, or vapours using a turbine-shaped rotor with blades that spin when the liquid, gas or vapour passes through it. The rotor blades are attached to a shaft, which is connected to a mechanical or electronic transducer. The transducer measures the rotational speed of the rotor and converts it into a flow rate. Turbine flow meters are commonly used in industrial applications for measuring the flow of liquids and gases such as water, oil, natural gas, and other fluids.

A turbine flow meter is constructed with rotor and blades that use the mechanical energy of the fluid to rotate the rotor in the flow stream. Blades on the rotor are angled to transform energy from the flow stream into rotational energy. The rotor shaft spins on bearings: when the fluid moves faster, the rotor spins proportionally faster. Shaft rotation can be sensed mechanically or by detecting the movement of the rotor blades.

Rotor movement is often detected magnetically, where the movement of the rotor generates a pulse. When the fluid moves faster, more pulses are generated. Turbine flow meter sensors detecting the pulse are typically located external to the flowing stream to avoid material of construction constraints that would result if wetted sensors were used. The RPM of the turbine wheel is directly proportional to the mean flow velocity within the tube diameter and corresponds to the volume flows over a wide range.

The turbine meter can have an accuracy of 0.5% of the reading. It is a very accurate meter and can be used for clean liquids and viscous liquids up to 100 centistokes. A minimum of 10 pipe diameters of straight pipe on the inlet is required. The most common outputs are a sine wave or square wave frequency, but signal conditioners can be mounted on top for analog outputs and explosion-proof classifications.
